Our Programs

History

Founded in 2000, the Volunteer Aging Council (VAC) is an avid supporter of Cherokee County Senior Services. The primary program that the VAC supports is the Meals on Wheels program, providing all of the nutritional supplement drinks such as Ensure, Boost and Glucerna for diabetics. Private donations have allowed the VAC to sponsor programs such as the “Last Stop” and safety program, helping seniors to meet their emergency utility and medical prescription obligations as well as safety features, such as ramps and grab bars.

"Last Stop" Emergency Fund

Provides funds for the emergency needs of seniors who have exhausted all other means of assistance. This includes emergency needs such as minor medical costs, dental care, utilities and other unexpected expenses.

Fan Drive

Provides box fans free of charge to seniors in Cherokee County who do not have air conditioning or who cannot afford the cost associated with operating their air conditioning unit.

Chore Program

Assists homebound seniors with basic chores such as trimming shrubs, changing light bulbs, and other minor routine home maintenance. This program also provides home improvements that make day-to-day life easier and safer for seniors by installing shower grab bars, grip tape, and other items.

Food Closet

An ongoing supply of shelf staples given at no charge to seniors who are in need of basic food products such as canned goods, rice, pasta, and other food essentials.

Building Project

Volunteers build ramps for wheelchair-bound seniors, allowing safe entry and exit from their homes. This project also provides for the repair and/or improvement of other household features that enhance the quality of life for the homebound, frail and struggling seniors in Cherokee County.

Make a Difference and help support seniors in our community through monetary donations or the donation of time or needed items.
